Secret Death

Abby had no idea where to look in the laptop, so clicked on a random file with a .xls extension.

A box appeared saying the file was password protected, so Abby typed in the laptop password but the box shook back and forth in a decisive ‘no’.

Undaunted, Abby typed in a number of other passwords, her aunt’s birthday, her birthday, to no avail.

She went on to another file marked “Craig”, no extension. It turned out to be a pdf, a news clipping of a man named Craig McCandless who’d been a venture capitalist manager at an investment fund. He’d had a sudden heart attack in a hotel in Boston and had been found by the housekeeper, who’d decided to ignore the ‘do not disturb’ sign that had been on the door for several days. The whole story was a few sentences long but it was enough to make Abby search the rest of the laptop for more info on Craig.

Another file came up, this one a word doc, with some lines of notes, what looked to be a bank account number, then ‘beneficiary: Marcia McCandless’ and a few more notes about transfer of funds dates.

Abby looked up ‘Marcia’ on the laptop, and turned up nothing, then googled her full name. This led to a series of news articles about Marcia McCandless’ disappearance from a house party next to a beach in the Hamptons, how police searched the shores for several days looking for her body, how her husband, Craig McCandless, was a prominent portfolio manager at Greaves and Dunlap. The next article was about how Marcia was found living in a domestic violence shelter under an assumed name. The story included quotes from her parents about being worried sick, how they hadn’t heard from Marcia for several months, how her husband had been desperate to find her. Now, it appeared that Craig MCcandless was nowhere to be found, and police were leading an investigation on his disappearance.

The last story on Marcia McCandless was how she’d started a boutique interior design firm outside of Newport.

Abby wondered how her aunt had known Craig McCandless. And if he’d really died of a heart attack. She wondered how she could find out more.

  1. I'm unsure about WHOSE laptop this is... her aunt's? Maybe I forgot? This would make a good TV show. I'd re-watch all the episodes! ---Macoff
