Unwanted was her specialty. Having been a prison guard at a womans' detention center, followed by a thirty-year stint as a parole officer, Chris knew the definition of abandoned. Retired now, she prefered the company of animals to people. People just lied and hurt you. Animals were loyal and grateful.
Somehow her ranch, which was actually an acre of land in Yorba Linda, California, had become a makeshift sanctuary for dogs, cats, rabbits, whatever. Of course horses lived there too. One had stepped on Esmerelda's foot, causing two broken toes. Chris just paid the bill, as always. Esmerelda was a stray abandonded in Mexico. A friend had rescued the part beagle, part chichuahua and brought her straight to Chris, knowing she'd be saved. People just dropped animals off, because Chris would manage, somehow.
As luck would have it, Esmerelda loved a pooch named Mr. Beasley. Mr. Beasley was a resucue as well. His "Pet mother" died from Covid. The "Pet-dad" could no longer care for him and through word of mouth, brought Mr. Beasely to Chris.
Howling continued. Peeing was everywhere. Chris wound up calling him, "Mr. Pee-sley." Being the patient, hopeful person, Chris knew the right family would come along for Mr. Beasley. Until then Chris and Esmerelda kept him company as best they could.
"After what I've been through with the botched colonsocopy, I'm putting my foot down. I'm getting a dog and that's final," Marjorie announced. She visited shelter after shelter, but just hadn't met the right dog. Her family was hopeful this idea would blow over, because nobody but Marjorie wanted a dog.
Out of desperation, she placed on add on the Next Door App. She stated she desired a mini-schnauzer, older, not a puppy, for a loving home, thinking no one would ever reply.
The next day, Chris responded to her post. Mr. Beasley was available. No fee required for an akc dog, aged six.
Chris brought Beasley for a meet-and-greet. It was love at first bark. Beasley walked to Marjorie and jumped in her lap. It was as though he'd been waiting for her and she finally showed up. " No such thing as a bad pet; just a bad pet owner,:Chris proclaumes..
The random peeing stopped. The howling stopped. Marjorie's heartache stopped. Chris found new friends, people who loved animals as much as she did. Esmerelda got to visit as often as Chris could bring her. Most of all, Mr. Beasley found a home.
