“Seal all the boxes and put ‘em on Craig’s List,” her son-in-law stated.
“ But what about her poetry, short stories, plays and all the artifacts? They could be mixed up in there!” Her daughter had a sentimental streak.
“ Crap, I tell you. All crap. She was a hack. We don’t have room or time to sift through the old ladies’ crap. Get it the hell out of here. Craig’s List. Post it as ‘Surprise! Find out what’s inside. A hundred bucks takes it all!’” Reluctantly, the daughter agreed.
A young college student who loved retro carted multiple boxes of the old woman’s treasures away in his 2006 Honda Civic. He seemed nice, smiling and waving as he drove away.
Only a tiny cedar wooden Hope Chest remained. A memento the daughter refused to surrender.A few weeks after the Craig’s- List-Cart-Away, the daughter opened the Hope Chest and found a note addressed to her.
“ My darling daughter, I am so sorry to have left things in such a state. I know as you leafed through the boxes, you found the thousands of dollars I had hidden for safe keeping. I figured attaching it to my poems and other writings would be a way to make sure my work had some value to you even if nobody liked the writing.”
A year later, one of her mother’s plays appeared on Broadway to rave reviews. She recognized the title as well as the college student standing near his Mercedes, smiling and waving to the crowds in his promotional video. “ Come see the play,‘ Mom’s Last Laugh!’ It’s a real dazzler, full of surprises!”

It is all about Karma. Loved the ending.
ReplyDeleteSweet lasting memory.
ReplyDeleteOh, such a great idea! I think I should attach some money to... wait a minute. What money? Oh, gosh, my stuff will have to sink or swim on its own merits! I do not like this son-in-law, and now I'll bet the daughter doesn't either, although it's not enough to divorce over. Or is it? ---Macoff
