The Professional

He called her “The Palomino” because her skin was a creamy tan-pink and her hair was milky white and her legs were long like a filly’s. And because she let him. But he wouldn’t be calling her that much longer because Palomino was about to drop out of the big leagues and go back to being just plain “Debbie.”

“Mysterio," as he was known in the ring, had dubbed her "The Palomino" the night they first met at the Shepherd’s Purse club out on Highway 14. He was there trying to have a beer without anyone asking for his autograph. She was there trying to lose her former dowdy “Debbie” self, thus the platinum blonde hair.

He had introduced himself as “Jim” — “James" to his mother — and he was wearing street clothes that looked almost normal except for the way they strained against his powerful frame. And he was nice. Polite and attentive. It was not until later that evening that she learned his true identity. And it was several nights later before she saw him in action. The announcer introduced him as “Mysterio as he entered the ring, strutting around shirtless and wearing only a Zoro-style mask and skin-tight, patent leather-shiny black pants before he started slamming his best friends into the mat and ropes in front of a screaming crowd and television cameras.

Debbie had watched in rapt adoration and horror as he played to the audience, which included more than a few children dressed in tiny versions of Mysterio’s signature costume and cheered him on with their impassioned pipsqueak yells. And then she watched as he exited the ring and stopped to hug the children and his bloodied opponents.

Palomino fell in love with both Mysterio and Jim — the kindness and the carnage of him — but after a year being part of his professional wrestling world, she knew it was time to move on. She wanted to retire from this flamboyant life and go back to being just plain Debbie. She wanted to dye her hair back to its natural mousy brown, trade her roller derby-style clothes in for scrubs and sensible shoes, and return to her job as a dental hygienist in Camilla, Georgia.

Part of her wished “Jim" could go with her, but she also knew “Mysterio" would never be happy selling cars or managing the local peanut plant like her father had done. He was a professional wrestler through and through and she was no real “Palomino,” she was just “Debbie," an amateur at life and love.
