Lisa wouldn’t get back into town until tonight. Tonight when his whole life would fall apart one way or another. Down in his basement apartment, Bob was thinking about his years as a POW. He tried not to think about those years, but the feeling of being trapped, of being in a cage again was unavoidable.
When he got back from the Green Lady, his marijuana store of choice there were three hours left. He hoped Lisa would get there soon and he sat down in “the chair of consolation and mercy.” That’s what Bob called his leather Stressless that cost more money than the remaining contents of his flat. He listened helplessly to the ticking of the clock and stared at his computer screen which read:

His novel was on that computer. Ten years of his life. The justification for his existence. Bob didn’t have the money to pay the ransom. It was all for shit.
Lisa finally arrived from work, some 30 minutes before FUBAR. “I know how devastating this is Bob, but you are more than your novel. You remember when we were first dating and you wanted me to read your work? Five years ago?” She pulled out a small thumb drive and said: “I know its old, but I’ve always kept it, I love your writing and I love you.” At that moment, his computer sounded five tones and the screen went blank for good.

Hooray! Real love (plus a tiny bit of technology) triumphs over evil with advanced technology! I like the complication of Bob's having been a POW. I don't know if Lisa lives in the basement, too, but she sure lights it up! ---Macoff
ReplyDeleteI can feel his angst and despair. The hope when Lisa produces a drive!
